The present study was designed to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of Erythropoietin (EPO) in brain of memory impaired mice. Memory impairment was produced by THP in different groups of animals. Morris water maze (MWM) and Elevated plus maze (EPM) test was employed to assess learning and memory. At the end of study brain anticholinesterase (AchE) activity was estimated. Administration of EPO significantly attenuated THP induced rise in ELT and THP induced decrease in time spent in target quadrant in MWM. Initial transfer latency (ITL) did not differ significantly in any of the groups whereas administration of EPO significantly lowered the RTL in THP treated mice on 2 nd day in EPM. Administration of EPO produced a significant attenuation of rise in brain AChE activity. The present study documents the preventive effect of Erythropoietin (EPO) in memory impairment to provide its multifarious actions as a neuroprotective, anti-cholinesterase, anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory.
